cOLD CASES
The following cases are open cases that have not resulted in a disposition.  Any additional information is appreciated and will be investigated.

Jean Johnson

Jean Johnson | Missing since February 2007

Jean Johnson, a Scott County resident, went missing in February 2007.  The investigation quickly centered around her ex-husband, who was arrested on March 08, 2007, on outstanding warrants taken out by Johnson two weeks before her disappearance.

The following day, local, state, and federal agents descended on Ditney Trail property to execute a search warrant.  The search for Mrs. Johnson's body, that day was met with negative results.  Doug Whisnutt, however had several weapons concealed in a fake wall.  Some of the weapons were illegal class III weapons, such as, machine guns.  Mr. Whisnutt was not allowed to be in possessing of a gun due to felony charges from his past.  He was then charged, in federal court, for his possession of the machine guns.  Mr. Whisnutt was convicted at a later date and was given a 25 year imprisonment sentence.  Mr. Whisnutt has been also served a criminal court indictment for the murder of Jean Johnson.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the recovery of Mrs. Johnson's body.  The reward is offered by the Carole-Sund-Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation.

Jarvis Maxey

Jarvis Maxey | Murdered

In late December 2005, a hunter discovered the severed head of a man in an Anderson County industrial park located in the City of Clinton, near the Clinch River.  In early January 2006, a headless body was found near a cemetery in the Smoky Creek area of Scott County, about 40 miles from where the head was discovered in Clinton.

The head and body were linked by U.T. Pathologists and DNA testing.  Dental records identified the victim as Jarvis Maxey, a 45 year old homeless man.  Jarvis Maxey had been in Nashville one month prior to his death and had been seen in the Knoxville area since leaving Nashville.  Mr. Maxey had a Texas Identification and was known to frequent homeless shelters.

Investigators believe the slaying took place in Scott County and the head was removed to hinder the identification process.  Mr. Maxey's hands were also removed, but never located.  The killer, and the motive for the killing, remains a mystery.

This case was inherited by Sheriff Lay's Administration when he took office on September 1, 2006, and is still considered and open investigation.
